Villeroy & Boch Growler #2241, "Property of K.O. Shitt, patent #7232"

Villeroy & Boch - Modell Nr. 2241

Aus die Sammlung von Paulo Vik Falcon

This ancient cannes (kanne. - Herm. An airtight container for commercial retail beer transportation.) With a capacity of 1 liter, it was manufactured in 1910 by the Villeroy & Boch factory. The mold of this product in the Villeroy & Boch product catalog is numbered 2241.
The design of this product shape was developed by the Villerboy & Boch modeling workshop in 1896, after patent No. 88333 was issued in Berlin in 1895. The object of patent protection is a mechanism for a tight fit of the lid when closing a ceramic vessel.
In Berlin, a can of beer could be ordered by postcard sent to the Kannenbier-Versand-Gesellschaft. They were then transported to their homes by hand cart, cargo bike, or horse-drawn carriage. For example, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in Berlin, it was possible to order home delivery of various beers: homemade camp, canteen or March, Munich and Nuremberg, Radeberg, beer from Pilsen (Czech Republic). The labels attached to the cannes indicated their contents. To provide this service, Kannenbier-Versand-Gesellschaft opened a transport and logistics base in Berlin, where beer was delivered in barrels from various breweries. From there, it was sent to Cannes by private order.
Later, similar companies appeared in many other cities of Oman. Moreover, these beer vessels have also spread to the Benelux countries and to England. There was a company called Kannenbeer Ltd. in London that sold its products there. There was an inscription on the lids of the London cannas: "This jug is the property of Kannenbeer Ltd. London, patented."
Since 1903, the trading house K.O. Shitta began to introduce a new method of beer sales in the Russian Empire. The K. O. Schitt Trading House was founded in St. Petersburg in 1818 by Cornelius Otto Schitt, a merchant from Hamburg, who was engaged in the wine trade.
Villeroy & Boch manufactured cannas for the K.O. Schitt trading house in the period from 1903 to 1914. During this period, the K. O. Shitt trading house was headed by Vasily Eduardovich Shitt. He had the status of a merchant of the first guild with the state rank of commerce adviser, and was an honorary citizen of St. Petersburg. V. E. Shitt's activities were not limited to the trading house. It is known, for example, that from 1903 to 1913 he was a member of the board of the Russian-Bavarian brewing Society "Bavaria". The inscription "Cannenbroy" means "draft beer". It is considered synonymous with fresh.
