The German kanne is a reusable, airtight container for transporting, storing and bottling beer or other beverages, which allows you to preserve their taste, aroma and carbonation for several days, preventing air ingress.
This cannes was made at the famous Villeroy & Boch manufactory in the city of Metlakh by order of the K.O. Shitta trading house from the city of St. Petersburg, Russian Empire. The K.O. Shitta trading house ordered such dishes from Villeroy & Boch for its beer retail trade in the period from 1903 to 1914. Specifically with such an artistic design - from 1903 to 1910. In 1910, the K.O. Shitta trading house received the status of a Supplier to the imperial court, after which this inscription was always present on bottles, wine barrels and beer cannas of the trading house. There is no such inscription here, which means that the item was made before 1910.
The K. O. Schitt Trading House was founded in St. Petersburg in 1818 by the merchant from Hamburg Cornelius Otto Schitt, who was engaged in the wine trade. Trade was conducted through a network of "renskov" (this Russian word comes from the consonance of "Rhenish wines") cellars, of which there were more than 37 in St. Petersburg by the beginning of the 20th century.
At the time when Villeroy & Boch was fulfilling kannes for the K. O. Shitt trading house was headed by Vasily Eduardovich Shitt, a merchant of the first guild with the state rank of commerce adviser, an honorary citizen of St. Petersburg. V. E. Shitt's activities were not limited to the trading house. It is known, for example, that from 1903 to 1913 he was a member of the board of the Russian-Bavarian brewing Society "Bavaria".
In the catalog of Villeroy & Boch products, the mold of this cannes is registered under the number 2241. The canna capacity is 1 liter.
