Albert Stahl & Co. #8982 "Frog on Book"

Albert Stahl & Co - mold 8982

From the collection of Paulo Vik Falcon

Albert Stahl & Co. #8982 "Frog on Book".

Porcelain shaped collectible beer mug "Frog on Book". The mug has a capacity of 0.5 liters and a height of 24 cm. The mug was made in the early 1990s in Germany at the Albert Stahl & Co. porcelain factory. Nevertheless, the company's prototype for this mug was an older model of the porcelain shaped mug "Frog on a book", which was developed for the Ernst Bohne Söhne factory in the period 1890-1895.
The company was founded in 1848 by Ernst Bohne, a German porcelain artist. In the future, his sons continued the business. This is reflected in the company's name. In the period before the First World War, Ernst Bohne Söhne became one of the recognized trendsetters in the style of figured porcelain mugs. In the catalog of finished products of the Ernst Bohne Söhne factory, the model of the Frog on the Book mug has the number 8982. This is a very expensive product nowadays, its price can reach up to $ 5 thousand. At the same time, it is considered a great collector's rarity.
In 1937, the Ernst Bohne Söhne porcelain manufactory was sold to Albert Stahl and registered as Albert Stahl & Co. vormals Ernst Bohne Söhne. Unfortunately for Stahl, the factory was located in Rudolstadt, in the former East German state of Thuringia, and after World War II, the production facilities were nationalized and eventually converted into the production of technical porcelain. Despite the fact that the company managed to preserve many of the original molds, and after the reunification of Germany to return those that were confiscated, the production of mugs both during the war and after it, during the socialist period of the GDR, practically came to naught.
After privatization in 1990, the company began to regularly produce E. Bohne Söhne shaped mugs again. They are very similar (though not identical) to the original Bohne products.
But we can definitely say that exactly 100 years later, the legendary "Frog on the Book" model has become available to collectors again. In the original version, the book was used to place a music box in it. The modern form does not contain such a function.
