Stein Schierholz & Sohn #61 "Munich child on a barrel".
3D mug "Munich child on a barrel". On the outer surface of the bottom of the mug, we see the brand that the Schierholz & Sohn porcelain manufactory used in the period 1972-1995. Accordingly, the mug was made during this period. At this stage of its existence, the Schierholz & Sohn factory produced reproductions of the most successful and popular models, which it produced in the original version in the second half of the 19th century.
The company, which eventually became known as Schierholz, was founded in 1816 in Plaue (Thuringia) by two merchant brothers from Arnstadt (Thuringia) named Haucker, one of whom died shortly thereafter. In 1817, Christian Schierholz, himself a member of a wealthy Arnstadt merchant family, became a partner in the firm, and by the end of the same year he had agreed to buy out the remaining brother Haucker's share. On December 29, 1817, the license to operate the plant was granted only to Schirholz. This explains the presence of the number "1817" on the brand of the Schierholz & Sohn factory. In 1995, when Schierholz finally ceased its activities as an independent legal entity, it turned 179 years old.
During its almost two-century existence, the company has been engaged in the production of shaped porcelain mugs only for certain relatively short periods.
For example, almost the entire range of shaped mugs in the amount of about 115 shapes was made by order of Schierholz & Sohn in the period from 1886 to 1899. In the product catalog of the Schierholz factory of that period, the model of the mug "Munich child on a barrel" received the number 61.
After the end of World War II, the city of Plaue, where the production base of the Schierholz factory was located, became part of the GDR. During the GDR, the Schierholz factory operated under the name Porzellanmanufaktur Plaue, abbreviated as PMP. The monogram of these three letters formed the basis of the factory's trademark, which was used for labeling products from 1972 to 1995. This mug has exactly this brand.
In addition to the stamp on the bottom of the mug, there are a number of other marks:
"Nr. 61 bunt" — the number of the shape (model) of the product and an indication of the color ("bunt" — German. colored, mottled) hand-painted.
Below is the artist's signature, presumably H. Zillermann, which confirms the author's work on the decor.
