"Voll Maas hat Gott lieb"

Villeroy & Boch - mold 1909

From the collection of Paulo Vik Falcon

This beer mug from the Villeroy & Boch factory is considered a worthy representative of the legendary series of model number 1909. The mug's facade bears the inscription "Guteinschenken." This can be literally translated as "Pouring well" or "Enjoying the pouring process." Essentially, it is a German idiom that can be compared to the phrase "Pour to the brim."
To the right of the handle, there is an inscription that reads "Voll Maas hat Gott lieb." Translated, this means "A full beer mug has the love of God." This catchphrase of German beer bars in the USSR was accompanied by a call from posters: "Demand a full pour of BEER up to the line."
The content of the illustration on the mug can be compared to a caricature that was relevant for Germany at that time. The mug was made in 1902.
Villeroy & Boch managed to become a market leader for all categories of customers when it introduced the No. 1909 mugs.
The perfect proportions for mugs with an internal volume of 0.5 liters were found. The design decision to increase the height of the outer surface while maintaining a universal volume of 0.5 liters expanded the possibilities for artists to create drawings.
The outer surface of the mug, when unfolded, measures approximately 23 cm horizontally and 14 cm vertically. The aspect ratio is 1.6, which is the golden ratio, a number of harmony.
This allows artists to create stories of any complexity and content. The customer of artists' services gets the opportunity to choose the best of what the masters can offer.
Masters of the genre of caricature successfully use this. On the side surface of the model of 1909, you can depict any humorous story with several characters that convey emotions and have a double meaning. This is exactly what happens. Essentially, these are comics on a beer mug. This has allowed for the creation of a vast number of stories. There are hundreds of them. And they were created by the best illustrators of their time. They shared their masterpieces and signed them. This is a clear sign that the artist is satisfied with their work.
