Stein Villeroy & Boch #1909/702 "Procession to the Tavern".

A video clip about this mug can be viewed at the link: [link]

Vintage German beer mug "Procession to the Tavern". The mug has a capacity of 0.5 liters and a height of 18 cm (excluding the protruding lever for lifting the lid). Taking into account the lever, the height of the mug is 21 cm.
This mug was made in 1900 at the world-famous German manufactory Villeroy & Boch. In the Villeroy & Boch catalog, the mold of this mug has the number 1909. In the same catalog, the decor of this mug is marked under the number 702.
The plot of the drawing is dedicated to a merry procession heading to the tavern "Zum grünen Kranze" (At the green wreath). The legendary "king of beer" is in the spotlight Gambrinus wearing a crown of barley ears. Gambrinus is accompanied by a buffoon (on his left shoulder) and a student (on his right shoulder). The drawing is inspired by German folklore and old student songs, in particular the song "Brüderschaft" (Brotherhood), written in 1821 by Wilhelm Muller and set to music by Karl Greden.
To this day, on the banks of the Saale River in Halle, opposite Gibichenstein Castle, there is a hotel called Krug zum grünen Kranze (Hotel at the Green Wreath). It is said that Wilhelm Muller, the brothers Grimm and Joseph von Eichendorff often visited this hotel during his law studies in Halle. It is also said that Wilhelm Müller wrote here "Das Wandern ist des Müllers Lust" (The miller's joy is a hike). In the 20th century, the hotel was owned by the Hermann family for decades. After World War II, during the GDR era, Krug zum grünen Kranze was a government-owned restaurant from which the television program Im Krug zum grünen Kranze (At the Green Wreath Hotel) was broadcast from 1983 to 1991. In 1978-1979, the hotel underwent major repairs.
