J.P. Thewalt #1294 "Tavern Scene"

Johann Peter Thewalt - modelnr. 1294

Uit de verzameling van Paulo Vik Falcon

Stein J.P. Thewalt #1294 ,"Tavern Scene".

An old German beer mug with a capacity of 0.4 liters was made at the J.P. Thewalt manufactory in 1885-1890. In the product catalog of the manufactory, the mold of this mug is marked with the number 1294. The factory name of the mug is "Tavern Scene".
The drawing of the mug is executed in the technique of ceramic engraving - etching. This method of applying jewelry is considered one of the most laborious, requiring the maximum amount of manual labor of the designer.
On both sides of the handle of the mug there is an inscription divided into two parts: "Lustig und geduldig, keinem Wirth was schuldig". Translated, it means: "A cheerful and patient visitor, does not owe anything to the innkeeper."
The mug is equipped with a pewter lid with ceramic inlay, decorated with a musical theme pattern. The presence of such a lid increases the collectible value of the item.
The ceramic factory was founded in 1852 by Johann Peter Thewalt (1822-1887). After the founder of the factory passed away, the business was continued by his heirs. The factory ceased to exist in 1930.
