Johann Peter Thewalt - mold 1297

From the collection of Paulo Vik Falcon

Stein

An old German beer mug with a capacity of 0.4 liters was made at the J.P. Thewalt manufactory in 1885-1890. In the product catalog of the manufactory, the mold of this mug is marked with the number 1297. The factory name of the mug is Courting Couple.
The drawing of the mug is executed in the technique of ceramic engraving - etching. This method of applying jewelry is considered one of the most laborious, requiring the maximum amount of manual labor of the designer.
A German proverb is written to the left of the mug's handle: "Je voller das Fass, je tiefer der Klang." Translated, this means: "The fuller the barrel, the deeper the sound."
To the right of the hilt is another German proverb: "Je edler das Nass, je heller der Sang". Her translation looks like this: "The nobler the drink, the louder the song."
The mug is equipped with a pewter lid with ceramic inlay, decorated with a love-themed pattern. The presence of such a lid increases the collectible value of the item.
The ceramic factory was founded in 1852 by Johann Peter Thewalt (1822-1887). After the founder of the factory passed away, the business was continued by his heirs. The factory ceased to exist in 1930.
