Walzenkrug

Uit de verzameling van Andrew Ives

Cylindrical, straight-sided, light gray stoneware stein with cobalt blue coloring.
Applied reliefs bordering etched designs. Due to the expense and labor involved, and the availability of other design techniques, applied reliefs fell out of common use around the mid 1700's.
The treatment of the lower handle by potters changed over time. The lower attachment pulled into a tail was a common feature between c.1700 and 1780.
The stein holds approximately 1.4 liters of liquid.

The large closed 5 ring hinge, lid, and hollow ball thumb lift are appropriate for the time period. The lid is personalized with D.D.W., what appears to be a tavern number of 13, and is dated 1752.
The pewter touch marks are currently unidentified.
