An antique porcelain beer mug "Marble Barrel". This old and very rare mug was made between 1865-1871 at the Utzschneider & Cie porcelain factory in Sargemins, Lorraine, France. In 1871, after Germany's victory in the Franco-Prussian War, the city was renamed Saargemünd, Alsace-Lorraine, Germany. It is located near the town of Metlach, where the Villeroy & Boch factory is based. This iconic proximity has influenced the work of Utzschneider & Cie. To this day, many collectors perceive the products of this factory, which lack identifying marks, as being from the Villeroy & Boch factory. This is understandable, as the factory staff could change their place of work depending on the employer's conditions.
The inscription on the mug is a traditional German folk saying, Spruch, made in Gothic script: "Rein sei der Trank,
Rein sei der Mund,
Rein sei die Liebe,
Das Herz gesund".
Translated from German, this quatrain sounds like this: "Let the drink be clean"; "Let the mouth be clean"; "Let love be clean"; "And the heart is healthy". This wish symbolizes the German ideals of mental and physical purity, as well as sincerity in feelings.
The mug is made in the form of a beer barrel with three hoops from below and three hoops from above. The coloring resembles the texture of wood. Nevertheless, the designer responsible for the decor clearly gravitated towards marble patterns. As a result, we have the "Marble Barrel" mug.
