Glass mug of the singing union. In the late 19th century, singing unions became popular in Germany. Ideologically and organizationally, they were similar to student fraternities. Unlike student fraternities, singing unions allowed women to participate and completely rejected violence in the form of fencing sparring.
The mug is made using the technique of blowing glass into a mold. It is a completely handmade product. The mug has a capacity of 0.5 liters. The mark is applied by a mechanical abrasive.
The mug's affiliation with the singing community can be traced through the content of the decoration of the inlaid lid of this beer mug.
The enamel ceramic insert of the inlaid lid features a coat of arms with a man playing a harp, surrounded by a red and white floral pattern.
The lid is adorned with a German phrase that reads, "Liedes Wert u. Sangeslust binden Seelen unbewußt." Translated, this means, "The value of songs and the joy of singing bind souls unconsciously."
On the inner surface of the ceramic insert in the mug, there is an inscription of personal content. It includes the name of the donor and the name of the recipient of the gift in the form of this mug. The phrase is written in the style typical of closed clubs, which includes a set of abbreviations and conditional abbreviations of words. Formally, the phrase reads as follows: "Dr. Giesecke s/l. (seinem lieben) Karl Angermann
z. frdl. Erg. Weihn. 1925.".
In translation, the inscription means: Dr. Giesecke – Dr. Giesecke (the name of the giver).
s/l. – short for seinem lieben (“to his dear one”).
Karl Angermann – Karl Angermann (the name of the recipient).
z. frdl. Erg. – short for zur freundlichen Erinnerung (“for kind remembrance”).
Weihn. 1925 – short for Weihnachten 1925 (“Christmas 1925”).
Final meaning: "Dr. Gieseke to his dear friend Karl Angermann, in memory of Christmas 1925."
