The "Satisfied Monk" figurative beer mug. Despite its outward appearance, this is a very interesting and rather rare mug. This is evidenced by a number of factors. On the outside of the bottom of this beer mug, there is an imprint of the brand stamp of the Wick-Werke Aktiengesellschaft factory. This type of stamp was used by the factory to mark its products between 1921 and 1951. These are official dates. However, it should be noted that after the outbreak of World War II, Germany's industry was completely redirected towards military orders. It was not practical to produce shaped mugs at that time. It was labor-intensive and energy-consuming. After the war ended, it became even less logical for Germany to produce mugs with this design. At least until 1951. Therefore, it is possible that this mug was produced before 1937.
The second important aspect of this mug's history is the origin of its mold design. The original mold for this shaped mug was developed by the design team at Merkelbach & Wick around 1880. In the Merkelbach & Wick product catalog, the mold for this mug is listed as 270I.
Merkelbach & Wick was founded in 1872 in Grentzhausen, westerwald, by Friedrich Wilhelm Merkelbach II and Georg Peter Wick. Under this name, they produced beer mugs and other ceramic products until 1921, when the founders' heirs disagreed. At that time, the company was transformed into a joint-stock company called Wick-Werke AG, which existed until 1984.
Thus, we have the opportunity to observe an object manufactured between 1921 and 1937 in the design style of the late 19th century.
