This antique beer mug called "The tavern scene" was made in the period 1895-1900 at the famous German Reinhold Hanke manufactory.
The capacity of the mug is 0.5 liters.
The bottom of the mug is raised significantly above the lower edge of the side surface of the case. This technique made it possible to emphasize the high aesthetics of the vessel without increasing its internal capacity.
The surface of the mug is decorated in the technique of artistic relief, which greatly complicates the process of its manufacture.
The central drawing depicts a scene of a feast in a tavern. The plot was borrowed from a painting by the famous German painter Friedrich Prels (1855-1834). Preels painted this painting in 1893. She gained wide popularity in Germany under the name "Geh setz di her". It is a Bavarian dialect of German. Translated, the phrase means: "Come and sit down here."
The magical appeal of this painting was provided by the masterfully executed technique of its author. In the foreground of the painting, Prels placed an empty seat at the table and a girl whose gaze is directed at the one who is looking at this painting. Looking at the girl and her corresponding gesture, the viewer does not arbitrarily perceive this as an invitation sent to him personally.
The subject of the painting was in such high demand that all the manufactories of that time, engaged in the production of beer mugs and jugs, used it to decorate their products.
The German proverb "Ein froher Gast ist niemandes Last" is applied to the surface of the beer mug behind the handle. Translated from German, this phrase means: "A cheerful guest is not a burden to anyone."
The inscription "Munich" is hand-engraved on the surface of the tin lid.
