Cold War Stein

From the collection of Randy Satterfield

At the front top of dthe stein it is named to Cpt (P) Kathy West. Below that is "Commander, 558th MP Co.". Below that are the standard crossed pistols of the Military Police. At bottom front it's dated Jun 88 - Jul 89. On the left side is an insignia and below that Kreigsfeld. I have no idea what the insignia is, it's not Kriegsfeld's coat of arms. Kriegsfeld is a muninipality in the Donnersbergkreis district which is in the middle of Reinland-Palatinate, Germany. On the right side is :558th Ord Ban." with it's insignia.

The following is courtesy of Walter Swett:
The 558th MP Company originally activated in January 1943 as an Escort Guard Unit. The unit served in the Philippines from 1945 to 1946 and in Korea from 1950 to 1953 before being deactivated.

In March 1962, the 558th MP Co. reactivated and was authorized the motto: Only the Best. The 558th assumed physical security

duties at the US Army Special Weapons Depot, NATO Site Number 107, “North Point”, Kriegsfeld, Germany. This site stored,

maintained and issued nuclear weapons. The 558th was responsible not only for physical security at North Point but also for

convoy escort when nuclear weapons were transported throughout Europe.

“North Point” fell under the command and control of the Advanced Support Weapons Command (AWSCOM), the 59th Ordnance

Group/Brigade. In 1972 a reorganization occurred and the 59th Ordnance Brigade was placed under the command of USAEUR.

The 72nd Ordnance Battalion reactivated as a subordinate unit of the 59th Brigade and was authorized a unit crest with the

motto: ”Security and Reliability." All units at North Point wore that unit crest.

The first female MPs were assigned to the unit in 1976, and the first female MP Commanding Officer was assigned in 1980.

With the implementation of the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Reduction Treaty (INF) in 1987 and a Presidential Order,

requiring all US Army nuclear weapons to be removed from Europe by 1992, the nukes were removed by autumn 1991 and on

November 1, 1991, the 558th MP Co. was once again deactivated.

The insignia on the left side is the shoulder patch of the 59th Ordnance Brigade.

The emblem on the right side is the distinctive unit crest of the 72d Ord. Bn. All units assigned to North Point after 1972 wore it.
