Blown glass stein most likely made in Bohemia. Cylindrical shape with a thick base and visible pontil mark. Stone wheel cut facets and ovals. Thick scrolled handle approximately two-thirds the height of the stein. Holds approximately 0.5 liters of liquid. Probably made in the very early 1800’s or possibly very late 1700’s.
Domed pewter lid, hollow ball thumb lift, and large closed 5 ring hinge are appropriate for the time period.
The lid is personalized “TS”. The lid also has an applied medallion depicting a scene commemorating St. John of Nepomuk. St. John was a 14th-century priest born in Nepomuk, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). According to legend, he was tortured and drowned (thrown from the Charles Bridge into the Vltava River) for refusing to tell King Wenceslaus IV what the Queen of Bohemia confessed. St. John is the patron saint of confessors, a protector of priests; as well as bridges and waterways, because of his drowning. He is often depicted with a halo of stars, a finger to his lips (symbolizing silence), and a crucifixed rosary.
