This antique large German beer mug was made in 1894 at the famous Villeroy & Boch factory in Metlach. In the Villeroy & Boch product catalog, the mold of this mug is registered under the number 1734. Also in the catalog of the Villeroy & Boch factory, its name "Lovers" is noted. As part of the mold number 1734, Villeroy & Boch produced mugs of two different volumes - 1.4 liters and 2.1 liters. In our case, a mug with a capacity of 2.1 liters.
The drawing on the surface of the mug is applied by the most complex and time-consuming method of hand engraving on ceramics with subsequent etching and final hand-colored painting.
This creature increases the value of the item. Today, this method of decorating mugs is not used due to its laboriousness and, consequently, high cost.
The mug bears the signature of the artist who designed the decoration and shape of the mug, Christian Warth (1836-1890). Christian Warth was one of the most prolific and sought-after artists at Villeroy & Bach. He designed about 60 beer mug molds for Villeroy & Boch. They continued to be released for many years after the Wart passed away. This mug is an example of that.
