"Drinking scenes, spirals upward around body cup"

Villeroy & Boch - mold 168

From the collection of Paulo Vik Falcon

This beautiful tall goblet was made in 1887 at the Villeroy & Boch (V&B) manufactory. Catalog number 168. In the V&B catalog, this goblet is listed as "Drinking scenes, spirals upward around body cup" (Drinking scenes, spiraling upward around the body of the goblet).
The goblet is decorated with delicate lace-like reliefs. The shape of this cup was designed by Ludwig Foltz II (Ludwig Foltz II), a famous architect, designer, and fashion designer who worked on projects in Regensburg and Munich. Foltz was also a bricklayer and therefore a Freemason. The V&B company, a staunch Catholic, would not tolerate Masonic symbols on their glasses and, having discovered them, would remove them. However, Foltz managed to subtly add his "signature" to new models. There is also one on this magnificent goblet.
Volz was born in Bingen am Rhein in 1809. Most of his models of mugs, jugs and goblets date from the 1840s and 1850s. In 1837 Volz taught at a vocational school in Regensburg, after which he was appointed professor at the Technical College in Munich. Between 1860 and 1863, Volz was the architect who completed the New Parish Church in Regensburg. Finally, he ended his days creating statues and other stone and wood carvings for the Frauenkirche in Munich. Volz died in Munich in 1867. For V&B, he designed dozens of forms that became a recognized highlight of the V&B collection. More information about Ludwig Foltz II's life and work can be found at the following link: [link]
