Bardolph and Falstaff

Matthias Girmscheid - mold 858

From the collection of Dale Measner

Pottery, etched, 1.5L, inlaid lid, signed “GK”.

Text:
“Trink und iss, dein Leid vergess.”
(Drink and eat, forget your sorrow.)

Sir John Falstaff is one of the most famous comic characters in all English literature, appearing in four of Shakespeare’s plays and later in Giuseppe Verdi’s final opera Falstaff, which was inspired principally by Falstaff’s follies in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor. Bardolph appears in both works as Falstaff’s drunken companion. This particular depiction is taken from a painting by Eduard von Grützner (1846-1925).
