INNSTADT BRAUEREI PASSAU - Masskrug

From the collection of Jorge O. Soriano

INNSTADT BRAUEREI PASSAU - Maßkrug

Description:

• Smooth glaze
• No potter’s lines
• Basic incised capacity mark
• Clean sans-serif typeface in cobalt blue
• No base mark
• No lid
• 1L capacity and calibration marks incised on the side
• Very good condition

These are all indicative of a mid-20th century mass-produced brewery mug. My estimate is approximately 1950s to 1970s. Some could even go into the 1980s, depending on condition and subtle style differences. However, the previous owner (from Germany) informed me it was from the 1950s, so given that fits the time period, I’ll go with 1950s.

Steins like this were used primarily in taverns and beer gardens, meant for durability and branding, not for tourist trade.

?

Terminology:

This can accurately be call this stein a:
• Masskrug (1-liter mug)
• Brauereikrug (brewery mug)
• Steinkrug (stoneware mug)
• Or simply a 1L brewery stoneware beer mug

All are technically correct, but Masskrug and Brauereikrug are the most specific for this type.

Key History:

• Founded: 1318, making it one of Bavaria’s oldest breweries.
• The name “Innstadt” comes from the Passau district of the same name, on the Inn River.
• Throughout the 20th century, it operated as an independent regional brewery.
• Known for traditional Bavarian styles—Helles, Dunkel, Weißbier, Bockbier, etc.
• 2013: Innstadt Brauerei merged with Arcobräu Gräfliches Brauhaus (Moos, Bavaria) but retained its brand and regional presence.
