Art Nouveau Spiral Design

Simon Peter Gerz - mold 1666

From the collection of Mike Finn

Simon Peter Gerz started making ceramic wares in 1862, but because of WW1 they ceased production for a short period 1917 / 1918 and then again in 1923. In 1999 all production stopped.
art nouveau (New Art) had it's roots in Britain, in the Arts and Crafts movement which started in the 1860's and reached international recognition by the 1880's. It flourished until the start of WW1 and was replaced by art deco in the 1920's. The stein body is about 4-1/2" tall and a little over 6" to the top of the thumb lift. In 1887 it was required to have Germany or Made in Germany on all exports. So this was made before 1887 or was purchased in Germany and somehow found it's way to the USA.
