Designed by Elisabeth Friedrich (Munich, Germany)
The lid relief depicts Nanette Kaula (1812-1877) and is the third in a series taken from the Schönheitengalerie (Gallery of Beauties), thirty-six portraits of beautiful women gathered by Bavarian King Ludwig I in the southern pavilion of Nymphenburg Palace in Munich, where they remain on display today. Known at the time as “Munich’s loveliest Jewess”, Nanette was the daughter of a Munich banker and leader in the city’s Jewish community. Original portrait by court painter Joseph Karl Stieler. (BSL)
