Collectible shaped beer mug made of porcelain "Drunken Monkey". The mug has a capacity of 0.5 liters and a height of 21 cm. On the outer surface of the bottom of the mug, there is a green stamp with an eagle above the letters R.P.M. This mark was used between 1955 and 1973 by the German company Royal Porzellan Manufaktur G.m.b.H. (R.P.M.).
The R.P.M. Manufactory was founded in 1955 in the city of Küps (Bavaria) and specialized in creating decorative porcelain products. The name of the factory R.P.M. consciously echoed the famous Berlin manufactory K.P.M. (Konigliche Porzellanmanufaktur, founded in 1751). This sometimes led customers astray. It should be understood that in 1955, when the R.P.M. manufactory was created, Berlin was the capital of the GDR, which was part of the camp of socialist states oriented towards the USSR. At the same time, Bavaria fell into the post-war occupation zone of the United States and became part of the Federal Republic of Germany. On January 1, 1973, R.P.M. merged with another similar manufacturer. After this period, the appearance of the stamp changed.
The figurative mug "Drunken Monkey" from the R.P.M. factory is a replica of a model that was originally designed in 1888 for the Schierholz & Sohn porcelain factory (founded in 1816). The design of the "Drunken Monkey" mug was created by Edmund Haase, a renowned German sculptor of his time (1850-1917).
Before joining Schierholz, Haase became famous for creating designs for the Meissen porcelain factory, which were used to decorate the Bavarian royal castles in Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee, Berg, and even Neuschwanstein, the "Castle of Dreams" of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. With such a portfolio, Haase became one of the best porcelain sculptors of his time. At Schierholz, he worked from 1886 to 1899. Haase was responsible for all the design work on the character-themed figure mugs produced in the late 19th century. As a result, Schierholz began producing the first figure mugs in 1886, and the "Drunken Monkey" model was among the first to be produced.
