This mug is part of the "Folk Heroes" (Volkshelden) series produced by the famous German manufactory Villeroy & Boch (Mettlach) in 1980-1985 The volume of the mug is 0.5 liters. Height 23 cm. The mug is decorated with scenes from the Swiss folk epic about its national hero William Tell. The central drawing of the beer mug depicts the famous scene "William Tell shoots an apple."
According to legend, the cruel governor (Vogt) of the Habsburgs named Gessler forced Tell to shoot an apple on his own son's head with a crossbow. Tell successfully completed the task. Tell had the second arrow in reserve. When Gessler asked why she was there, the hero replied that if he had hit his son, he would have killed the tyrant himself with the second arrow.
William Tell is a legendary Swiss national hero, a symbol of the struggle for independence and marksmanship. Most historians consider Tell to be a mythical character. The first records about him appeared only 150 years after the alleged events (the end of the XIII — beginning of the XIV century). Similar legends about marksmen are found in the folklore of the Scandinavians and the British.
The mug was released in a limited edition of 1981 copies. This mug has an individual number 1300. There are no other instances with this number.
