Monkeys and Cats mug. This is a very well-known mug among collectors. You could say it's iconic. It was made at the Marzi & Remy manufactory in the period 1895-1900. In the Marzi & Remy product catalog, the mold of this mug is listed under the number 940. The mug of this mold has a capacity of 0.5 liters. The design of the mold provides for the placement of a music box under the bottom. To do this, four through holes were pressed on the inner side surface of the skirt at the time of molding to attach the mechanism of the music box. However, not all of these mugs were equipped with a music box. This option led to a 20-30% increase in the price of the mug. Therefore, it was selected and installed at the distributor's service center according to the customer's individual order.
In German culture, the monkey represents excessive alcohol intoxication, in which a person loses control of himself and begins to fool around. In this context, monkeys are always accompanied by cats. Cats are considered synonymous with a hangover.
Germans pay a special place in the culture of drinking to the image of a bear. It is used in relation to the most resistant to intoxication persons who are able to drink the entire celebrating campaign. As a rule, these are the main organizers of the drinking party.
In German culture, the opposite of monkeys, cats and bears is considered to be a bull, a donkey and other strong, solid and hardworking animals, as is commonly believed in humans. It was these two groups of animals that were opposite in temperament that were used to develop the design of the decoration of this mug. The handle is completely executed in the form of a bear drunk on zero.
There is an inscription in German on the top and bottom edges of the circle. Her translation reads as follows: "It is better to deal with monkeys, cats and bears
than to constantly work with bulls and donkeys."
If you remove the animal symbols, the meaning of this ironic German saying boils down to the following: "It's better to be a drunk and suffer from a hangover than to work hard all the time."
