Brauhaus Rothenburg o.T.- Maßkrug

Uit de verzameling van Jorge O. Soriano

Brewery / Brauhaus Background: “Brauhaus Rothenburg o.T.”

• Location: Rothenburg ob der Tauber (o.d.T.) a historic town in Bavaria, Germany. My wife and I lived only a few minutes away and visited frequently.

History:
• The original brewery, known as the “Stately Brewery” (herrschaftliches Bräuhaus), was established in 1699.
• In 1724, it became a “Free Imperial Brewery” (freies reichsstädtisches Bräuhaus).
• In 1804, Johann Georg Roth acquired the brewery, transitioning it into private ownership.
• By 1905, master brewer Josef Beugler took over, leading to significant growth.
• In 1920, brewing operations moved to a larger facility outside the city walls, and the original site became known as the “Altes Brauhaus” (Old Brewhouse).

Design: The blue-framed depiction of a regal figure drinking from a large mug, accompanied by the “BRAUHAUS ROTHENBURG o.t.” inscription, indicates a promotional or commemorative piece, possibly aimed at tourists.

However,

“Brauhaus Rothenburg o.d.T.” suggests that it either originated from:
• The original historical brewery within Rothenburg’s city walls, or
• The tavern/pub location that remained active after brewing operations moved in the 1920s (now the Altes Brauhaus)

Given all the other characteristics, it’s plausible that the stein dates from the mid-20th century, potentially between the 1950s and 1970s, especially considering Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s rise as a tourist destination during that period.
