Early 19th century Westerwald stein

Uit de verzameling van Paul Van Eck

Pewterer's mark IFS for Johannes (Jan) Francis Schutjes

This type of stein is found in the 'low countries' (the Netherlands / Belgium). Such steins were produced in large quantities. They were made to be used, not to be esthetically pleasing. Hence the finish was never very detailed and the lid often did not fit too good.

The owner's initials 'I M' are impressed into the pewter lid.

The inside of the pewter lid shows a pewterer's mark "IFS" combined with a rose. This is most likely pewterer Johannes (Jan) Francis Schutjes, born 1806, worked in Eindhoven between 1824 and circa 1875, died 1885.
