Early 19th century stein

From the collection of Paul Van Eck

This type of stein is found in the 'low countries' (the Netherlands / Belgium). Such steins were produced in large quantities. They were made to be used, not to be esthetically pleasing. Hence the finish was never very detailed and the lid often did not fit too good.

The owner's initials 'AVR' and the number '102' are impressed into the pewter lid, which sadly is no longer attached to the stein.
