Anheuser-Busch Budweiser "Hugenhots" collectible beer mug (catalog number CS331). It was released as part of the limited edition "Budweiser Opera Card". The series consists of three models: "Martha", "Hugenhots" and "Siegfried". This model is the second in this series. It was released in 1997 in a limited edition of 5,000 copies. Each mug was assigned its own individual number. My mug is numbered 2216. I already have exactly the same mug in my collection, but with the number 585. You can see it at the link: [Link]
Produced by the world-famous Ceramarte factory in Brazil, commissioned by the Anheuser-Busch brewing company. The central bas-relief reproduces a vintage poster depicting a scene from Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera Les Huguenots. The body of the mug is decorated in the form of a theatrical stage with voluminous red curtains and gold decorative elements.
Scrolls with information are placed on the left and right sides of the mug's handle. On the scroll on the right we see information about the opera. There is a typo on the scroll. Here the opera's name is "THE HUGENHOTS" instead of the original "Les Huguenots". The author of the music is the German-French composer Giacomo Meyerbeer. The opera premiered in Paris on February 29, 1836 (at the Paris Opera). This is a large-scale musical work in five acts, the libretto for which was written by Eugene Scribe. The plot revolves around the tragic events of St. Bartholomew's Day in France during the religious wars between Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots).
On the scroll to the left of the mug's handle, we see a quote from a late 19th-century advertising campaign that linked Anheuser beer to Giacomo Meyerbeer's famous opera Les Huguenots. "COUNT DE NEVERS: Pour it to the brim, and let's touch glasses. Come here, Sir Raoul, and let's have a BEER ANHEUSER."
Series "Budweiser Opera Card" was created as a tribute to the historical legacy of the company's founder, Adolphus Bush. At the end of the 19th century, Adolphus, being an avid lover of art and opera, ordered a series of collectible cards with lithographs of scenes from the great world operas for the advertising campaign of his premium beer. A century later, in the late 90s, Budweiser designers decided to transfer these archival promotional cards to ceramics. Only three strictly limited models were released in this series.:
Issue No. 1 (1996) — "Martha" (model CS300). It is dedicated to the romantic opera by Friedrich von Flotov.
Issue No. 2 (1997) — "The Huguenots" (model CS331). It is dedicated to the historical drama by Giacomo Meyerbeer (it is her element that is depicted on this beer mug).
Issue No. 3 (1998) — "Siegfried". It is dedicated to the monumental opera by Richard Wagner.
