Anheuser-Busch #CS300 "Martha"

Ceramarte - mold 300

From the collection of Paulo Vik Falcon

Anheuser-Busch collectible beer mug "Martha" (catalog number CS300). The mug is the first model in the limited edition Budweiser Opera Card. Handmade in 1996 by the famous Ceramarte manufactory in Brazil, commissioned by the American brewing company Anheuser-Busch. The mugs of this series were produced in a strictly limited edition of up to 5,000 copies. Each mug has its own unique individual number on the bottom. My mug has been assigned the number 759.
The case is made of high-quality ceramic (glazed porcelain/ceramics) with hand-painted and gilt elements. The detailed shaped lid is cast from tin and stylized to resemble the dome of a classical opera house. The central medallion reproduces an old illustration from Friedrich von Flotov's German comic opera Martha (Act III, Scene I), depicting a character named Plunkett making a toast with a mug of beer in a country garden. The composition is framed by luxurious theater wings made of deep burgundy velvet with gold fringes. Scrolls with inscriptions are located on the left and right sides. The inscription on the right scroll indicates the third act (Act III) of the opera "Marta" by Friedrich von Flotov. The opera Martha, or the Richmond Fair, was first performed in Vienna on November 25, 1847.
The text on the left scroll is an old poetic advertisement, stylized as classic English poetry: "PLUNKETT:
And that explaineth
where’er it reigneth
is joy and mirth.
At every hearth
resounds a joyous song.
Look at its goodly
color here, where else
can you find such
brown stout and healthy beer as
BUDWEISER BEER".
A historical curiosity. In the text, Budweiser is called "brown stout" (dark stout), although today this brand is associated worldwide exclusively with pale lager. This is a reference to the early history of American brewing and marketing campaigns at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when beer was often advertised as a "healthy and nutritious drink" (healthy beer).
