Villeroy & Boch - Modell Nr. 1914

Aus die Sammlung von Paulo Vik Falcon

Stein Villeroy & Boch #1914, "Gymnast".

An old beer mug called Gymnast. This antique beer mug was made in 1889 at the famous Villeroy & Boch factory. The capacity of the mug is 0.5 liters. In the product catalog of the Villeroy & Boch factory, the mold of this mug is registered under the number 1914.
The mug is decorated with a ceramic etching pattern. This method of drawing is considered one of the most time-consuming and beautiful. This seriously increases the value of the product.
The plot of the drawing is dedicated to gymnastics. In the middle of the 19th century, gymnastics was a popular form of physical fitness and mental strength improvement in Germany. Gymnastics enthusiasts united in special clubs, held festivals and tournaments.
The "4F" symbol, depicted in two places in the central part of the drawing, symbolizes the movement founded by Friedrich Ludwig Jan (1778-1852), or "father of gymnastics Jan", who is credited with organizing the first gymnastics clubs (Turn Vereine) in Germany in the early 19th century. The four letters F stand for "Frisch, Fromm, Fröhlich, Frei" (fresh, pious, happy, free).
The motto is printed on the sides of the mug
“Gut Heil”. Translated from German, the phrase means "Good health". There is an inscription under the motto, which translates as:
"May the strength gained with our hearts and hands
help us live and die for our Holy homeland." The text is taken from the song of an old German song “Ich hab’ mich ergeben” (I dedicated myself), written in 1820 by Hans Ferdinand Massmann.

The mug is equipped with a tin lid decorated with a monogram of two letters AB. These are the initials of the original owner of the mug. The mug is personalized. This fact makes the mug unique and one of a kind.
