Österreichischer Birnkrug

Aus die Sammlung von Andrew Ives

Austrian pear shaped faience jug with a flared foot and curved neck. The ribbon handle has a rolled lower end. The birnkrug holds approximately 1.35 liters of liquid.

The birnkrug is decorated with a primitive folk art design (common for Austrian faience). The central decoration is of a man sitting on a barrel raising a birnkrug and is flanked by floral designs. The body decorations are bordered, top and bottom, by manganese and bright green ribbons. The color palette consists of blue, green, yellow, and manganese which may be due to Haban/Anabaptist influence on the Austrian faience industry.

Due to the heavy use of the color green and similarities to birnkrug examples in the digital catalog of the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art, the location of manufacture may have been the town of Gmunden.

The pewter foot ring, domed lid, hollow ball thumb lift, and large closed 5 ring hinge are appropriate for the time period.
