"Couple on River Bank"

Roßkopf & Gerz - Modell Nr. 789

Aus die Sammlung von Paulo Vik Falcon

Stein "Couple on River Bank".
The mug was made in the period 1901-1905 by the German manufactory Roßkopf & Gerz (R&G).
In the R&G product catalog, the mold of this mug is registered under the number 789. The artistic design of the mug is executed in the Biedermeier style.
This style reflects the ideology of provincial, partly petty-bourgeois and sentimental art that spread in the German-Austrian province. In art history, the term "Biedermeier" was first used in 1894 in G. Bötticher's article "The Future of Ornamentation: The Development of Wallpaper Art," and later in P. Schmidt's book "Biedermeier Painting" (1922). By 1900, the word "Biedermeier" was used figuratively to mean "the good old days."
In 1927, German literary scholars applied this term to German literature from 1815 to 1840.
The inscription on the mug is also in this style. "O, du wunderschner deutscher Rhein," which translates to "Oh, you wonderful German Rhine." This is a fragment of a romantic song with lyrics by W. Matthias and music by Rudolph Ferster. Details can be found at the link: [Link]
Roßkopf & Gerz (R&G) was founded in 1901 by the potter and designer Karl Wilhelm Roßkopf in partnership with the businessman Alois Jacob Gerz (born 18 March 1871). Very little is known about Karl Roßkopf, however, Alois Gerz's grandfather was Peter Gerz II of Gerz & Söhne. Both had experience in the pottery industry, having worked for Reinhold Hanke, and their wide range of products was in demand. In 1905, Rosskopf left the factory.
