This blue and white 2-liter jug was manufactured by Reinhold Hanke (RH) around 1909-1910. The date present in the engraving on the lid of the jug allows us to draw a conclusion about the year of manufacture.
The management of the RH manufactory invited the artist Adolph Dekker to develop the design of this jug. This is evidenced by the artist's signature in the form of a monogram of two letters: "D" under "A". It can be found in the lower part of the jug, to the right of the handle. The catalog number for the 1952 shape is also located there. This jug is listed under this number in the RH manufactory's product catalog.
Manufacturers used large beer jugs as part of a set of six smaller mugs. These mugs had different shapes and were listed under different numbers in the manufacturers' catalogs.
This gift "tournament" 2-liter GUT-HOlZ jug also has a 1/4-liter satellite mug. In the RH catalog, this little one is listed as item 1368.
On the outside of the jug, there is no traditional RH factory mark. RH could afford to make such exceptions when producing a special order. In this case, the jug may have been a special order for a bowling tournament.
In Germany, bowling was known as kegeln until the early 20th century. Kegeln was a popular game among all social classes. The Germans used 9 pins in their game, instead of the 10 that became the norm in the 20th century worldwide.
In Germany, this game was considered a gambling activity, and only later became a sport.
The bottom of the pitcher is inscribed with the words "GUT-HOlZ".
In a bowling alley in Germany, the greeting "Gut Holz!" is a wish for success and good luck, similar to "Petri Heil" in fishing or "Weidmanns Heil" in hunting. The expression "Gut Holz!" originated from the fact that the pins and balls were traditionally made of very hard wood. The phrase "Gut Holz!" became a wish for the bowlers to have a successful throw and achieve success.
On the front of the tin lid of the kushin, the inscription "Zur Erinnerung an den von den Geschäftskollegen" is engraved, with the date of the event "12.V.1910". Translated from German literally, this phrase means "In memory of what was done by business colleagues."
In fact, it means "In memory of the bowling tournament with business colleagues on May 12, 1910." It is possible that this was a tournament between employees of the same company, or between employees of companies working under supply or sales contracts. In any case, this pitcher was created by the RH factory as a special and exclusive gift for the participants of a corporate bowling tournament.
