Marble style Beer mug

Paul Utzschneider

Aus die Sammlung von Paulo Vik Falcon

Marble style Beer mug.

The mug is made in majolica technique - from faience with thick tin glaze. The glaze imitates multicolored marble. It was made around 1860s - 1870s, as indicated by the baroque lifting mechanism in the form of a curl and the absence of a mark of capacity. In Germany, the unified system of metric, weight and capacity began to introduce the respective
imperial law from January 1872.
These mugs were produced by several factories during this period, including Villeroy & Boch in Luxembourg and Utzschneider in Sargemin. The Luxembourg mugs were typically made of marble stone with a two-tone pattern, while the Sargemin mugs were usually coated with brown glaze. This multicolored marble glaze is quite unique and unusual.
In the Villeroy & Boch catalog, this mug is registered under the number 24. For more information, follow the link:

However, in the second half of the 19th century, there was another manufacturer of beer mugs with the same shape and color scheme in Germany. This is about the German manufacturer Dorfner and Co. [Link] This company was founded in 1829 in Hirschau, Bavaria, and existed until 1890. The full history of Dorfner Co. in Hirschau can be found in three stages of its development in Chris Wheeler's book "Mug Brands." The company produced high-quality beer mugs, which are actually quite rare. The full text of this article can be found at the following link:

In my case, I have a mug from the Utzschneider factory in Sargemino. Utzschneider & Cie Porcelain Factory - Sargemins, Lorraine, France. In 1871, the city of Sargemins became Saargemünd, Alsace-Lorraine, Germany. In 1918, the city returned to France.
The pottery workshop was founded by Nicolas-Henri Jacoby in 1790, but in 1800, Paul Utzschneider took over the factory. The company is still operating. For more information, follow the link:
