Brauhaus Neustadt a.d. Aisch - Maßkrug

This one has some damage; see chip on rim and hairline crack inside mug. These flaws do not take-away from the historical value or the presentation of this brewery mug.

Historical Context:

Located in the Franconian town of Neustadt an der Aisch, the Burkard-Bräu was founded in 1828 and later operated under the name “Brauhaus Neustadt”. The design on this stein proudly displays Bavarian heraldic imagery, including the iconic blue-and-white lozenges and stylized HB crest — not associated with Hofbräu München, likely a decorative nod to “Herzogtum Bayern”, and a broader homage to Bavarian brewing tradition. While definitive records of Brauhaus Neustadt’s closure or continuation are scarce, its absence from today’s brewery directories suggests it ceased operations during the mid-to-late 20th century, likely a casualty of the postwar consolidation of Germany’s brewing industry??

Summary:

This 1-liter stoneware masskrug from Brauhaus Neustadt a.d. Aisch (formerly Burkard-Bräu, est. 1828) reflects the robust Franconian brewing tradition. Produced likely in the 1960s or 1970s, it features a side-located “1L” capacity mark and calibration line — a telltale sign of later production. The smooth salt-glaze, unlined exterior, and swirl-marked interior are typical of the era. Its cobalt blue design bears the Bavarian coat of arms with the “HB” crest and brewery name in ornate script. This mug now stands as a quietly elegant artifact from a lesser-known, but proudly regional brewery lost to time.

As always, I very much welcome and appreciate your feedback, both on the steins and breweries.
