Aus die Sammlung von Jorge O. Soriano

Previous owner’s description:

“BRAUEREI-KRUG - BRAUEREI "AKTIEN-STÖTTER" AUGSBURG - TOP-RARITÄT!!!”

Previous Owner says this was made in 1900.

1. Who (or what) is Aktien-Stötter Augsburg?

• Aktien-Stötter, AG, Augsburg was not a brewery at all but a joint-stock stoneware manufactory in Augsburg, active around the turn of the 20th century.
• They produced heavy, deeply incised steins (often in collaboration with pewterers for lids), commissioned by breweries or sold as generic 1 L mugs.

2. Statue Motif = Emperor Augustus
• The figure is almost certainly a stylized Roman statue of Emperor Augustus—Augsburg’s namesake (“Augusta Vindelicorum”).
• Displaying him on the mug tied the product to Augsburg’s proud Roman heritage.

3. Dating Evidence ? circa 1900
• Deep incised decoration (rather than painted or stamped) and the very fine, uniform carving point to late-19th/early-20th c.

Bottom Line:

Maker: Aktien-Stötter AG, Augsburg
Form: Heavy 1 L stoneware masskrug with deep-relief Emperor Augustus motif
Date: Circa 1900 (?1898–1902)
Notes: Though commissioned by breweries, this is a stoneware factory’s product, leveraging Augsburg’s Roman legacy rather than a specific brewery brand.

As always, I appreciate and welcome your feedback. I realize full well not all my catalog information is 100% accurate, but, I try to get it mostly right. Of course I welcome corrections and additional information!!
