The title character central to this depiction is 'Hermann' (or 'Arminius' as he was known to the Romans), who successfully led an alliance of Germanic tribes in the crushing defeat of three Roman legions at the Battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 A.D.
The battle effectively put a permanent halt to the expansion plans of the Roman Empire into territories east of the Rhine river.
