This antique jug was made in 1890 at the famous Simon Peter Gerz factory. The jug has a capacity of 2.5 liters, the height together with the lid is 32 cm. The mold of this mug in the product catalog of the S.P. Gerz factory has the number 329. The model is called "The Great Navigators of the Renaissance".

The great navigators of the Renaissance (the end of the XV — XVI century) are considered to be the discoverers, whose expeditions marked the beginning of the era of great geographical discoveries. Thanks to their travels, the world map has changed radically, and Europeans have gained access to new lands and trade routes.
The key figures of that era were:
Christopher Columbus (1451-1506). In 1492, in search of a western route to India, he reached the shores of America. He made four expeditions, discovering the Bahamas and the Antilles, as well as the coast of Central and South America.
Vasco da Gama (1460/1469–1524). Portuguese explorer, who in 1497-1499 was the first to lay a direct sea route from Europe to India, circumnavigating Africa past the Cape of Good Hope.
Fernand Magellan (1480-1521). He organized the first ever circumnavigation expedition (1519-1522). He discovered the strait between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans (Strait of Magellan) and proved the sphericity of the Earth.
Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512). The Italian navigator, who was one of the first to suggest that the lands discovered by Columbus were not Asia, but a new, previously unknown continent, later named America in his honor.
Francis Drake (1540-1596). English navigator and privateer, who made the world's second circumnavigation (1577-1580) and discovered the strait between Antarctica and Tierra del Fuego.
Bartolomeu Dias (c. 1450-1500). The Portuguese, who in 1488 was the first European to circumnavigate Africa from the south and discover the Cape of Good Hope, paving the way for Vasco da Gama's campaign.
Portraits of these six historical figures are placed on the side surface of the jug.
The neck of the jug is decorated with mythical marine-themed characters. Here you can see the silhouettes of two seahorses with fish bragging rights. Conquerors of the sea latitudes sit on horses as triumphants. In the center of the neck, between the heads of the horses, the mythical Master of the seas is depicted trying to protect his possessions from humans.
The jug is crowned with a massive inlaid lid. The ceramic insert represents a high ocean wave.
In 1892, the world community celebrated the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America. In anticipation of these events, in 1890, the S.P. Gerz factory designed this jug, making its symbolic contribution to preserving the memory of that great era.
