German antique beer mug "Bowling game in a tavern". The 0.5 liter mug was made in 1900 at the famous Villeroy & Boch factory. The mug is decorated with a pattern executed in the most sophisticated technique of hand engraving on ceramics followed by etching technology. This type of decoration was carried out exclusively manually by craftsmen of the highest level of training.
A bowling alley story was used to decorate the mug. This popular entertainment in Germany was classified as gambling. They always played for money. In German bowling, 9 pins were used, not 10 as in American bowling, which is now known all over the world. Actually, the bowling game itself was brought to the USA by German migrants in the middle of the 19th century. The game got its own development there.
The inlaid lid shows the layout of pins in a German bowling alley.
In the Villeroy & Boch product catalog, the mold of these mugs is registered under the number 2632.
