Jug Merkelbach & Wick #15 "Scrollwork with Saying".

The name of the product is "Jug with the saying". This antique beer jug with a capacity of 2.25 liters was made by the Merkelbach & Wick in the period 1872-1880. The height of the jug, excluding the massive tin lid, is 27 cm. In the product catalog of the Merkelbach & Wick mold of this jug is registered under the number 15.
Merkelbach & Wick was founded in 1872 on the initiative of Friedrich Wilhelm Merkelbach II (born 1840, died 1896) and sculptor and fashion designer Johann Peter Wick (born 1837, died 1914). Until 1920, the Merkelbach & Wick has created about 3,250 molds of beer mugs and jugs in various artistic styles. An average of 60 new molds per year. It follows from this that mold number 15 was created in 1872, that is, in the first year of the Merkelbach & Wick.
The jug contains a traditional German saying (Motto), which urges not to postpone the joys of life and good deeds for later.
The inscription is made in the Gothic style (fracture). Fracture (German Fraktur — fracture) is a late type of Gothic writing that originated in the XVI—XVIII centuries. Original text in German: "Kannst Du trinken, kannst Du lieben,
Thues nicht morgen, thue es heut’.
Gutes Werk naf morgen schieben,
Hat schon mancher Thor bereut". Literary translation:
"If you can drink and you can love, don't do it tomorrow, do it today. More than one fool regretted that the good deed was postponed until tomorrow".
The jug was supplied to the market complete with six small serving mugs with a capacity of 0.3 liters.
