A large antique German beer mug called "Mountain Dweller" with a capacity of 1 liter. The mug was made in 1885 at the famous Villeroy & Boch factory. In the Villeroy & Boch product catalog, the mold of this mug has the number 1533.
The decoration of the mug is made in a combination of two complex techniques. The relief base for the drawing is applied using the tapestry technique. It's like a carpet attached to a wall surface. The portrait drawing itself is made using the ceramic etching technique. Combining these two techniques is considered very difficult and time-consuming. This significantly increases the value of the product. Because of the specifics and shape of the decoration, beer mugs of this category have received a stable name among collectors - tapestry mugs.
This tapestry depicts a cheerful bearded highlander in a tall hat. He leans with both elbows on the table. In his left hand he holds a mug made of grey ceramic.
The author and performer of the design of the decoration of this mug is Kristin Warth (Christian Warth, 1836-1890). Christian Warth's signature is on the lower right side of the table.
At the bottom of the circle there is a text in German in the old font: "Schlag dir die Sorgen aus dem Sinn, Und denk nit an dein Hauskreuzspinn!" Loosely translated, it means: "Put the worries out of your head and don't think about domestic troubles!" (literally: don't think about your "home cross" — a grumpy wife or domestic problems). This is a typical German table toast, encouraging you to relax, drink a beer and forget about everyday worries.
