Marzi & Remy #2023 "Ottonia Student Fraternity"

Marzi & Remy - mold 2023

From the collection of Paulo Vik Falcon

Stein Marzi & Remy #2023 "Ottonia Student Fraternity".

The 0.5 liter beer mug was made in 1930 by the masters of the famous Marzi & Remy manufactory. In the Marzi & Remy product catalog, the mold of this mug has the number 2023. Under this issue, Marzi & Remy produced circles of the "Various Subjects" category. Mugs without factory decorations were produced in this category. This allowed customers to contact special art workshops to order an individual drawing there. This was often used by members of student unions. In this case, one such example is presented.
The artistic painting of this circle was designed by individual order of the members of the Catholic student fraternity K.St.V. Ottonia München. The central place of the drawing is occupied by the coat of arms of the brotherhood with the inscription "Ottonia sei's Panier!". Translated from German, this is: "May Ottonia be our banner!". The motto of the student fraternity is written in German in the lower part of the central drawing of the circle.: "Der Wahrheit zum Schutz, der Lüge zum Trutz!". It translates as: "In defense of the truth, in spite of lies!"
The student fraternity K.St.V. Ottonia München was founded in Munich on January 28, 1866. It is still functioning. It is considered the oldest fraternity in Munich as part of the Cartel of German Catholic Student Associations (KV) that has survived to this day.
The practice of dueling is prohibited in the KV fraternity. The wearing of fraternity symbols and the formation of any political ties are not allowed.
Behind the handle of the mug there is a commemorative inscription with the names of the members of the Ottonia student fraternity and using the abbreviations and abbreviations standard for such associations: "Robert Alt,
Eugen Schilling,
ihrem lb. Lbb. h.c.
Fritz Gögelein
z. frdl. Erg. Juli 1930". Translated, it looks like this: "Robert Alt, Eugen Schilling to his dear honorary brother Fritz Hegelein as a token of friendly memory. July 1930.
" Such clubs were often given by fraternity members to each other in honor of the end of the semester or special achievements.
The mug is decorated with a massive pewter lid with a relief decoration containing the symbols of the Ottonian brotherhood.
The term Ottonia was formed from the Latin designation of the Ottonian dynasty (10th-11th centuries) in the context of the Holy Roman Empire. The Saxon Dynasty The Ludolfings (Ottons) were a German royal and imperial family (X–XI centuries) that consolidated the foundation of the Holy Roman Empire. Otto I the Great (king since 936, emperor since 962) defeated the Hungarians, conquered Italy and strengthened the church. The dynasty is known for the "Ottonian Renaissance" of culture, art and strong royal power. The Ottons relied on the church, appointing bishops and abbots as vassals, which consolidated their power over the dukes. The Ottonian dynasty laid the foundation for the development of German statehood and the formation of the Holy Roman Empire.
In this regard, the decision of the student fraternity to take the name Ottonia when it was founded in 1866 looks symbolic.
