A German saying is written on the mug in Gothic script: "Den größten Zwist / Ein guter Christ/ Beim Bier vergisst". Approximate translation: "The greatest strife / A good Christian / forgets Over beer." It's a common expression to encourage peace and friendliness over a beer.

There is no capacity mark on the mug. It can be concluded that the mug was painted before 1872.
