Regimental Reservist

From the collection of Walter Swett

5. Comp, 1. Grosssh. Hess. Infantr. Leibgarde Regt. Nr. 115. Darmstadt. 1905-07 (5th Company, 1st Grand Ducal Hessian Life Guard Infantry Regiment, Number 115, Darmstadt) named to Gefreiter (Private First Class) Kullmann.

It was the oldest German infantry unit and traces its roots to March 11, 1621, when Landgrave Ludwig V ordered the creation of an Infantry unit which was named the “Dressler Company”. After nearly 200 years the unit underwent several name changes. In 1806, after Hesse-Darmstadt had been promoted to a Grand-Duchy the unit was awarded the title Life Guard Regiment. Over the next 100 years, the unit underwent additional reorganizations and name changes. In November 1906, the name changed once again, this time to Life Guard Infantry Regiment (1st Grand Ducal Hessian) No. 115.
