In 1931, Haddon Sundblom, a graduate of the American Academy of Arts, created an image that later became an integral part of Christmas symbols around the world. And although he was not the first to portray Santa Claus in this style, he devoted the years from 1931 to 1965 to forming the famous image that Coca-Cola would use for many years to come.
When the Coca-Cola company commissioned Sandblom to depict Santa Claus, he was inspired by the poem "The Visit of St. Nicholas," written by Clement Clark Moore in 1822. This poem, also known as "The Night Before Christmas," provides a very vivid description of Santa Claus, which Sundblom was able to depict in his paintings. Let's get acquainted with a fragment of the poem "The Visit of St. Nicholas" by Clement Clark Moore from 1822: "He was dressed all in fur, from head to toe, and all his clothes were covered with ashes and soot. He had a bundle of toys on his back, and he looked like a merchant who had just opened his bag. His eyes were sparkling like coals! His dimples are like merry rays! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His funny little mouth was curved like a bow, and the beard on his chin was as white as snow. He held the stump of his pipe tightly in his teeth, and the smoke wrapped around his head like a wreath. He was a real funny old man".
In 1964, Sundblom created his last Santa Claus, but Coca-Cola continued to use images based on his work for decades to come. The original Coca-Cola paintings with Santa Claus have traveled all over the world and are considered one of the most valuable items of the brand.
