"Sumpfhühner" is the collective name of a genus of birds in the family of shepherds (Rallidae). Birds lead a secretive lifestyle in dense thickets along the shores of reservoirs, in swamps and flood meadows. They swim and run well on soft soil or floating vegetation, but they fly reluctantly and heavily.
In German, the word "Sumpfühner" can sometimes be used ironically or metaphorically in relation to a person who likes to "hang out" in dubious places (bars, parties) - "wading bird" or "night owl" in a specific context.
