Beer mug "Löwenbräu" 2 liters "Wies'n pokal der sumpfhühner"

Wick Werke

From the collection of Paulo Vik Falcon

In the center of the lid there is an inscription "Wies'n pokal der sumpfhühner".

"Wies'n pokal" means the Cup played at Oktoberfest.
"Sumpfhühner" is the collective name of a genus of birds in the family of shepherds (Rallidae). Birds lead a secretive lifestyle in dense thickets along the shores of reservoirs, in swamps and flood meadows. They swim and run well on soft soil or floating vegetation, but they fly reluctantly and heavily.
In German, the word "Sumpfhühner" can sometimes be used ironically or metaphorically in relation to a person who likes to "hang out" in dubious places (bars, parties) - "wading bird" or "night owl" in a specific context.

The term "Wies'n pokal der sumpfhühner" means "Oktobkrfest Cup of Marsh Chickens". It belongs to the traditional Munich Oktoberfest event, which often includes social events and humor contests.  "Marsh chickens", as a rule, represent an informal regular drinking or entertainment society. Such groups often hold their own small tournaments or award ceremonies at Oktoberfest in tents. The “cup" is usually awarded in a humorous way, for example, for special perseverance during a celebration, for the best costume, or as part of small games. Note. This is an internal corporate or private tradition within the framework of the general Oktoberfest. As a rule, fans of such traditions agree in advance and gather in small Oktoberfest tents.

Based on this, I conclude that this two-liter mug was used by one of these companies as a tournament cup in the period from 1972 to 1983. The names of the Cup winners are printed on the edge of the lid and on the lower tin hoop.
Franz turned out to be the funniest and most groovy of them. He has won 5 times in 12 annual tournaments. Charly is in second place in terms of the number of wins - 4 times. Günter is in third place with three wins. And Peter has only one win.
