From the collection of Paulo Vik Falcon

The question mark handle is the signature design style of Oberpfälzer Steingutmanufaktur Eduard Kick in Amberg

This antique shaped mug would have been made 1860-1880 at the Oberpfälzer Steingutmanufaktur Eduard Kick factory in Amberg.

Simon Hezendörfer founded a faience factory in 1759. Eduard Kick purchased 50% ownership of the factory in 1843, followed by full ownership in 1846. Kick is thought to have co-operated at some time with Dorfner & Co. and subsequently had a commercial tie up, exchanging moulds, skills etc.

In 1824, due to financial problems, the Royal Porcelain Factory in Ludwigsburg was closed. For about 20 years, the intellectual assets of the royal porcelain factory have been frozen from sale. As soon as the auction was lifted, Kick bought back the purchased ninety seven of their molds, which he used for the production of both porcelain and Steingut. Although, they were mostly molds for decorative statuettes.

It is also known that Kick constructed new porcelain (high temperature) ovens in 1860. However, by 1905, they were no longer advertising porcelain as part of their product range. Kick died childless in 1880 and his brother-in-law Wenzeslaus Rasel took over the company. By 1905 his sons, Hans Rasel and Commerce Chairman Eduard W. Rasel, were running the company, however they closed the ceramics factory producing steins etc. in 1910 or 1911, due to foreign competition. See the link for the source of information: [link]

The Eduard Kick in Amberg factory had wholesale customers of unpainted porcelain products for further refinement for retail sale. The most famous wholesale buyer and distributor was A. Kirsch from Nuremberg. See the link: A. Kirsch [link]
