Glass Beer Mug "The Grand Prize of the 3rd Exhibition of the Thuringian Association of Canary Lovers and Bird Protectors".
An old German glass mug is made by the method of blowing glass in a faceted shape. This technology involves a large share of manual labor. This affected the cost of the product. Nevertheless, this factor made the mug more unique and individual. At the end of the 19th century, such mugs were equipped with tin lids inlaid with porcelain plates. Then porcelain inserts were decorated by hand by artists on individual orders.
Our mug is decorated with a plot from the life of birds. The front side features a canary singing bird. It protects its nest.
The lever of the metal hinge for lifting the lid is designed as a feathered predator, as if attacking the nest of a defenseless canary.
On the inner surface of the lid, there is a dedication inscription that helps to understand the author's hidden message in the drawing.
Translated from German, the inscription reads: "Honorable Prize. 3rd Exhibition of the Thuringia Canary Breeding and Bird Protection Association, Jena. December 2-3, 1911."
On the outside and inside of the lid, the artist left his signature. It turned out that the artist who designed this mug was a woman named Emanuel Jellineck (E.J.). For more information, see the link:
[link] This was a rare occurrence in Germany at the time. At that time, only men were involved in the art of painting.
Emanuel Jellineck's art studio was located in Jena, where he specialized in painting porcelain and ceramic items. The studio was known for its artistic designs of student mugs, which were commissioned by various student associations. This was due to the fact that Jena is considered a student city. It is famous for its university, which was founded in 1558.
It seems that the association of canary lovers was established at one of the faculties of the University of Jena.
