In bowling slang, a "bull" is a poor throw in which the ball goes sideways and fails to knock down any pins.
The term "hare" in bowling refers to a clever throw with a twist, allowing the ball to curve and knock down more pins than a straight throw.
In bowling, the expression "trained dog" refers to pins that will fall down as if on command after the player throws the cue ball toward them. A good "trainer" can knock down all the "dogs" with one ball; a bad one cannot.
