Magdeburg Faience Stein

other

From the collection of Andrew Ives

Cylindrical, straight-sided earthenware stein with tin oxide glaze base color. Comfortably holds approximately 1.5 Liters.

From the SCI article "Identifying Faience Steins-Part 6" by William Hamer:
Magdeburg is located in central Germany, near Berlin and Potsdam. The factory produced from 1754 to 1785. Paintings are in dark and light shades of manganese, yellow, green, and blue. Architectural and animal scenes are usually painted in a manganese color. The main scene on Magdeburg faience steins is centered in the front of the stein and usually there are trees on the sides. Unique to Magdeburg white glazed steins is that the trees on the sides are always palm trees, with the exception of floral steins. There are blue clouds painted in the background, often with flying birds. Magdeburg faience handles are heavy, thick, and free-formed; tapering from top to bottom. The handles are "D" shaped, flat on the inside, and rounded on the outside.

The pewter lid, top rim lip ring, base ring, large closed 5 ring hinge, and hollow ball thumb lift are appropriate for the factory and time period. The pewter touch marks, both with a date of 1755, are currently unidentified.
The "M" on the base is the Magdeburg factory mark.
